New Global Justice Study Abroad Program
Seattle University School of Law and the Nelson Mandela Institute of the University of Witwatersrand Faculty of Law in Johannesburg, South Africa are offering a new program called Global Justice Advocacy which focuses on training students to be global advocates. The program includes courses taught jointly by US and South African professors on substantive international and comparative law, as well as a course on cross-cultural legal writing and oral advocacy, and equal numbers of spaces in the program are reserved for US and African law students. Three courses will be offered in 2008: International Human Rights Law and the Role of Corporations; Advanced South African Constitutional Law and Jurisprudence; and Global Justice Advocacy/Legal Writing. The Global Justice Advocacy/Legal Writing course will draw upon the substantive materials presented in the other two courses to teach students how to argue persuasively in a variety of fora. US and African students will be paired together to work as teams in that course. Because of the intensive nature of the program, particularly the Global Justice Advocacy/Legal Writing course, the program is limited to 25 US and 25 African students. The application deadline is April 15, 2008. Important U.S. Income Tax Information for International Students
All international students who were present in the U.S. in Spring and/or Fall 2007, are required to file the U.S. income tax return for the year 2007. For those that worked on OR off-campus, you will be receiving W-2 forms from your employer in order to complete your 2007 tax return.
If you are on F-1 or J-1 and have been in the US for less than 5 years, then you are eligible to use CINTAX, a tax software to assist nonresidents in filing their tax forms. This software is free of charge for current international students and their dependents. For more information on this service, please click here. After you submit your information, CINTAX will send you a password and more detailed information within the next 2 business days.
Please read through the tax information on our website to guide you based on the forms you may have received and what forms you need to file. The tax software listed above only assists with filing your Federal tax forms, not your State forms.
If you are currently on H-1B or have been in the US for more than 5 years (and are F-1), then you will be filing as a resident and are therefore not eligible to use the above nonresident software.
Tax filing deadline is April 15, 2008.
“International” Clerkship Opportunity for JD students
From The American Lawyer: "For the hyperambitious, the only federal court clerkships worth striving for are in the chambers of elite judges, acting as way stations on the road to a clerkship on the U.S. Supreme Court. Some choose a different path to clerkship paradise, however, one that leads through courts in the South Pacific. These former U.N. trust territories have legal systems similar to those of the United States. And many invite American law graduates to spend a year or two working in their courts as clerks and counsel" For more information, please click here.
