LL.M. and EXC exam information

We have revised our policy regarding the use of computers for your exams and are pleased to be able to offer you the option of taking your exam on a laptop AND receiving extra time to complete the exam.  Students who do not have a laptop computer can still take their exams on a lab computer, however they will NOT be able to receive extra time for their exams.  This policy applies only to those exams for which the professor has given permission for students to use a computer.

All ESL students (that is, those LLM or EXC students who did not receive their LLB in English) will be rescheduled to take all their exams in room C20. Each one of you will receive an email telling you exactly which date each of your exams will take place.  Unless they have an exam conflict, students who are NOT ESL students will NOT have their exams rescheduled and will NOT receive an email.

Room C20 will therefore be populated both by EXC and LLMs taking exams on their laptops and by EXC and LLMs handwriting their exams. We will make every effort to separate the exam takers so that hand writers are not disturbed by laptop exam takers.

Additional information from Dean Sowle:

Notice About Borrowing Laptops from the Computer Center: The Computer Center has a limited supply of laptop computers reserved for use in emergency situations that arise during exam period. Please contact me if you register to take an exam on laptop, and your laptop suffers unexpected problems that cannot be remedied before your exam. The Computer Center's laptops also may be used (subject to availability) if your computer has problems immediately before or during an exam, as long as the problem is not due to your failing to properly configure or register your laptop to run the SofTest program. (SofTest is the program all students are required to use for taking exams on computer; the Computer Center will email and post information separately about the SofTest program.) Because of limited supply, the Computer Center's laptops are not available for general loaning purposes during exam period, including to students who do not own a laptop or are Mac users. However, if you have exceptional circumstances that you believe justify borrowing a laptop for an exam, please contact Dean Sowle to discuss your situation.

•Availability of Professors' Old Exams. Many professors make their old exams available for students to review. Exams dating from 1992 and before are bound in volumes available in the 10th floor reading room in the Library. Exams after 1992 are available online by going to and clicking on the Exam Database link (under Resources).

Reminder: OPT deadlines!

This is just a reminder that if you wish to apply for OPT, you can still do so. You must apply for OPT before completion of study. All forms must be received at US CIS by the last date of the term in which you are completing your degree. The International Center recommends that you submit your application at least 90 days before you want to start working on OPT. For more information, please click here for the OPT tutorial.

“International” Clerkship Opportunity for JD students

From The American Lawyer: "For the hyperambitious, the only federal court clerkships worth striving for are in the chambers of elite judges, acting as way stations on the road to a clerkship on the U.S. Supreme Court. Some choose a different path to clerkship paradise, however, one that leads through courts in the South Pacific. These former U.N. trust territories have legal systems similar to those of the United States. And many invite American law graduates to spend a year or two working in their courts as clerks and counsel" For more information, please click here.
