Headlines for the Week of May 23, 2011

Congratulations, Graduates!

The OILP would like congratulate the graduates of the LL.M. class of 2011 on your hard work and dedication this year. We are proud of all of you and wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors!

Please stay in touch and let us know if you need anything from us in the future. We are in the office all summer during normal business hours, so please stop by to say goodbye before you move onto your next steps.

Please continue to check your Kentlaw email for any final instructions regarding your alumni status, new alumni email address and diplomas. All transcript requests can be directed to the Registrar's Office.

•Email and Network Accounts. Email and network accounts will be deactivated on Monday, August 1, at 11:50pm (the first Monday after the July bar exam).

If you would like to save your emails, you may download a .pst file of your inbox, following the instructions here. Please note that you must be on campus in order to download your .pst file, as you need access to the Chicago-Kent server for the download. Moreover, please be sure to have a flash drive or recordable CD on which to save your emails, as the files are generally too large to send by email. It is your responsibility to make a backup of your emails to a .pst file. If you have questions, please contact the Center for Law and Computers at pchelp@kentlaw.edu or 312-906-5300.

As a Chicago-Kent graduate, the Alumni Association is pleased to offer an e-mail forwarding service using an @alumni.kentlaw.edu email address. This service is available through the Alumni Online Community (see below) and allows you to choose a username@alumni.kentlaw.edu address that will be forwarded to your specified personal email account (e.g. gmail, yahoo, or work e-mail, etc).  Your username can be your current kentlaw.edu username or you can create a new one.

The advantage of the e-mail forwarding is that once you give your forwarding address to friends and colleagues, you’ll no longer have to notify everyone in your address book of a new or discontinued e-mail address; you can simply update the email account to which the email forwarding address sends to by logging into the Alumni Online Community. Please note that any emails sent to your current @kentlaw.edu address DO NOT automatically get sent to your alumni forwarding address. You must notify your contacts of your new address.

In order to access e-mail forwarding, you must sign up for the Chicago-Kent Alumni Online Community, which, in addition to email forwarding, allows you to update your alumni information, search the alumni directory, join groups, network with fellow alumni, and keep up-to-date with all the news and events at Chicago-Kent. Accounts for May 2010 graduates will be available by mid-July. Click here to sign up now and we will send you your login information when you have access! For questions or concerns, please contact the Chicago-Kent Alumni Association at alums@kentlaw.edu or 312-906-5240.

•Clearing Out Lockers. Please clear your lockers out no later than Monday, August 1. Anything left in lockers after that date will be removed. If you are unable to clear your locker out by that date, please contact me to make arrangements for your locker contents to be set aside for you. Note: This applies only to graduating students. If you are not graduating, you do not need to clear your locker out; you will keep your current locker until you graduate.

Tax information for LL.M. students.

TAX Filing Requirements

Whether you worked(unpaid/paid/income) in 2010 or not, filing the United States income taxes with the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) is required by federal law and mandated by your immigration status. This also applies to your dependents on F-2/J-2 visas. Failure to file taxes may result in revoking your immigration status. In addition, you may be entitled for a tax refund, which you may want to receive.

The Deadline for filing taxes

  • If you worked(paid/income) and/or received room & board scholarship in 2010, file form1040NR-EZ, 8843, and IL1040 by April 18, 2011.
  • If you did not have any income during 2010, file form 8843 by June 15, 2011.

For mor information on how to file taxes, including access to a web-based software to help you file your taxes, please visit the International Center website. Any questions related to taxes can be directed to icenter@iit.edu

Optional Practical Training Tutorial

There is an extremely helpful tutorial located here: http://www.iit.edu/~internat/OPTNEW/ .  As noted in the directions, you must complete the tutorial before you can access the necessary application materials.

Once you have completed the tutorial and the application, there is a form that needs to be signed by your academic advisor.  Dean Harris is the academic advisor for all LL.M. students.  As such, you can leave the form with Hilary or Lauren for Dean Harris to sign (you do not need to make an appointment, unless you feel that you need one) and we will notify you when it is ready to be picked up.

Please note that to be eligible for OPT, you have to be an F-1 student who has studied at least one academic year in the U.S. (Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 in most cases).

ICenter Hours and Travel Signatures

Reminder: The International Center has advising hours at the Downtown Campus on Thursdays from 9:00am to 4pm in room 656.  Please call 312-567-3680 by Wednesday at 4:30 pm to make an appointment.

If you are planning to travel outside of the U.S., you are required by SEVIS to have a travel signature.   To obtain a travel signature on your I-20, please bring it to the International Center.  The International Center recommends that you bring your I-20 to them at least one week in advance.  We advise that you get your travel signature well in advance.  A travel signature is valid for 12 months; however, we strongly advise that you obtain a new signature if the previous travel signature is more than 6 months old.   For more information on travel, please see: http://www.iit.edu/~internat/forms/Travel_Handout_F1.pdf.
