Institute for Science, Law & Technology

A Joint Venture

The Institute for Science, Law & Technology, a joint venture of the academic units of Illinois Institute of Technology, is designed to meet the growing need for science and law-trained professionals capable of addressing the complex issues that arise in a global, technologically driven marketplace of ideas, products standards, and conflicts.

The most difficult challenges at the intersection of law and science today arise from new technologies. New possibilities in biotechnology, such as cloning and genetic engineering, raise difficult questions about ethics and challenge traditional legal concepts. Environmental concerns about the generation of greenhouse gases, rain forest devastation, and sustainable development challenge public policy. The Internet and other new information networks escape legal control at national boundaries. The Institute for Science, Law & Technology, as part of a major technological university with additional strengths in law, business, architecture, psychology and design, provides cross-disciplinary approaches to the challenges of new technologies.

Institute Mission

The mission of the Institute is to provide a forum to produce and disseminate knowledge on the implications and applications of science within societal and legal contexts. As part of its mission, the Institute sponsors long-term, multi-disciplinary research, public conferences, judicial training, symposia for journalists, and other programs. Public programming, scholarship and research, and student educational opportunities in the Institute focuses on biotechnology, information technology, environmental science, and cross cutting issues such as products liability, intellectual property, design of legal and market institutions, and use of technology in the courtroom. In addition, Institute staff and faculty draft laws and regulations and develop other programs that guide public policy decisions.

Institute Faculty

Institute Fellows, appointed from the Illinois Institute of Technology faculty, and non-resident scholars representing a breadth of disciplines comprise the faculty of the Institute for Science, Law & Technology.  Fellows and non-resident scholars contribute a broad range of perspectives for implementing the Institute's cross-disciplinary mission.
