Super Bowl XXXVII will be played in San Diego on
January 26. More money is wagered on the Super
Bowl than on any other sporting event. Hundreds of
Internet gambling sites offer bettors a chance to
bet on everything from the coin toss to the final
outcome of the game. Are these sites legal? Are there
state or federal laws to protect online gamblers?

J. Krent is available to discuss civil and
criminal liability, privacy issues and jurisdictional
issues related to online gambling.
A military hearing is being held for two Illinois
Air National Guardsmen involved in a "friendly
fire" incident that killed four and wounded eight
Canadian soldiers during the war in Afghanistan. The
hearing will determine wither Maj. Harry Schmidt and
Maj. William Umbach should be court-martialed. They
each face 64-year-prison terms. Last year, a U.S.
military tribunal said the officers exercised "poor
airmanship and a fundamental lack of flight discipline.
Professor Michael
I. Spak, an expert on military law, is available
for interviews. Professor Spak served on active duty
with the U.S. Army in the Judge Advocate General's
Corps from 1963 to 1969 and has remained in the U.S.
Army Reserves. As Colonel Spak, he is currently liaison
officer of the Judge Advocate General's School, Charlottesville,
Virginia.
The federal trial of Scott Fawell continues.
Fawell, who served as former Gov. George Ryan's chief
of staff and campaign manager, is charged with racketeering,
theft of government funds, conspiracy to obstruct
justice, perjury, mail fraud and filing false tax
returns. Citizens for Ryan, the campaign committee,
has also been charged with racketeering charges, the
first such charges to be filed against a political
campaign committee. Experts will be available to discuss
the trial as it progresses.
The CBOT's new electronic trading platform.
The Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) last week selected
LIFFE Connect to provide an upgrade to its electronic
trading platform. Exchange officials said LIFFE Connect
is better able to execute complicated trading strategies
than its current provider, Eurex. Professor David Norman is director of market technology at
IIT's Center for Law and Financial Markets and author
of Professional Electronic Trading. He is available
for interviews.
On January 27, chief weapons inspector Hans Blix
will deliver to the UN Security Council a full
report on what his team has found in Iraq. The Bush
administration is deploying troops to the region.
However, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan that it was
too early for the Security Council to consider whether
to authorize military action against Iraq. Professor

Brown is co-director of Chicago-Kent's International

Marketing. Prospective students are invited to
