ADVISORY TO PRODUCERS, COLUMNISTS, AND ASSIGNMENT, LEGAL, PLANNING, BUSINESS AND DAYBOOK EDITORS

CHICAGO–January 29, 2007–Chicago-Kent College of Law and Stuart School of Business have experts available to discuss current issues. To reach any of our experts, call Gwen Osborne, director of public affairs, at (312) 906-5251. Press releases and earlier advisories are available on our Web site: www.kentlaw.edu/news/advisory.

The FBI reportedly has adopted an Internet surveillance technique that is "broader and more intrusive" than the system (formerly known as "Carnivore") the government abandoned in 2001. CNETnews.com reports that agents are compiling massive databases on Internet users that later can be searched by names, e-mail addresses or keywords. Provisions of the U.S.A. Patriot Act give the FBI permission to do warrantless Internet surveillance establishing probable cause that are limited to capturing e-mail or IP addresses, but not message content. The current "vacuum-cleaner approach" goes beyond those limits and may include Web browsing or all e-mail messages that travel through a network. Chicago-Kent dean Harold J. Krent, who served on the Illinois Institute of Technology team that examined Carnivore, is available for interviews.

"12 Angry Men," Reginald Rose’s critically acclaimed drama about a jury deliberating the fate of an accused murderer, is being performed at the LaSalle Bank Theatre in Chicago. Professor Nancy S. Marder, who teaches a course on juries, judges and trials, has written extensively about the American jury system. Professor Marder is the author of a new book called Jury Process. Her recent law review articles include Juries, Justice and Multiculturalism and Juries and Technology: Equipping Jurors for the Twenty-First Century. Professor Marder is available for interviews about the American jury system and about "12 Angry Men."
