Alex Blake is back. In Immunity, the third installment of Chicago-Kent Distinguished Professor Lori B. Andrews’ popular forensic thriller series, geneticist Alexandra Blake is trying to discover what caused the mysterious deaths of a DEA agent and eight other people in Taos, New Mexico. With the aid of the dead agent’s partner, Dr. Blake follows clues that lead her to the Department of Homeland Security, a radical Native American group, and a public square fountain. Professor Andrews is available for interviews about her new book, which she will sign at 12:30 p.m. on September 11 at Borders, 150 N. State Street in Chicago.

AARP, formerly the American Association of Retired Persons, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The nonprofit organization with nearly 40 million members is dedicated to "addressing the needs and interests of persons 50 and older"–-an estimated 25 percent of the U.S. population. Chicago-Kent professor Howard C. Eglit, an expert on law and aging, is the author of Elders on Trial: Age and Ageism in the American Legal System and of a three-volume treatise, Age Discrimination. Professor Eglit is available to discuss legal issues faced by older Americans.

September 10: "The U.S. Supreme Court on the Second Amendment: What Happens Next?" Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in District of Columbia et al. v. Heller upheld an individual’s right to possess a firearm for private use. Virginia attorney Stephen Halbrook, who represented 55 U.S. senators and 250 congressmen as amici curiae in the case, and Chicago-Kent Distinguished Professor Sheldon H. Nahmod will analyze the decision, what it means for American gun owners, and the implications for gun bans in cities including Chicago, Oak Park, Evanston and San Francisco. Following the discussion, Halbrook will sign copies of his book, The Founders’ Second Amendment. The program, which begins at 3 p.m., is co-sponsored by the Heartland Institute, Independent Institute and Chicago-Kent College of Law. September 18: 26th annual Federal Sector Labor Relations and Labor Law Program. Mike Causey, senior correspondent for Federal News Radio, will address the topic "Speaking Truth to Power: A Message for the Next Administration from a Practiced Observer." After a break, Michael McAuley, national counsel, National Treasury Employees Union, and Steven Sharfstein, director of labor and employee relations, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, will participate in a panel discussion, "Speaking Truth to Power: A Message to the Next Administration from Observant Practitioners." Chicago-Kent professor Martin H. Malin, director of the Institute for Law and the Workplace, will serve as conference moderator. Other program highlights include a presentation on the "Results of the 2007 Merit Principles Survey" conducted by the Merit Systems Protection Board, "Labor Relations and Generational Differences," and a discussion of "The Hatch Act in the Computer Age." Sponsored by Chicago-Kent's Institute for Law and the Workplace, the program is the longest-running conference on federal sector and postal labor relations and labor law held outside of Washington, D.C.
