July 2002

Dean Harold Krent was quoted in a Los Angeles Times story about the arrest of Adelphia founder John Rigas and the significance of the public manner in which he was taken into custody. The story was reprinted in newspapers throughout the country.

Adjunct Professor Eldon Ham was quoted in a Christian Science Monitor story about the troubles facing Major League Baseball. Professor Ham was also quoted in an ABCNEWS.com story about pending legislation in California and New York that would bar professional sports organizations from operation in those states if they did not test for steroids.

Dean Krent was a guest on Minnesota Public Radio's "Marketplace" to discuss whether the recent crackdown on corporate executives is a sincere attempt by the White House at reform or a calculated attempt to revive the economy.

Professor A. Dan Tarlock was quoted in Chicago Tribune and Chicago Daily Herald stories about a suit filed by the City of Chicago against Elk Grove Village challenging a new property tax ordinance passed by the village. The city sees the ordinance as an attempt by the village to block the intended expansion of O'Hare International Airport. Professor Tarlock was also quoted in a Daily Herald story about an earlier decision in which a judge ruled that the city needed a permit from the state before buying land in DuPage County for the O'Hare Expansion.

Professor Richard Kling was quoted in a Chicago Sun-Times story about a federal court decision to reverse a ruling that spared a shoplifter from jail on the basis that she was a "shopaholic."

Professor David Thomas was interviewed by Medill News Service's "Forum" about a public meeting to brief the legal community about civil liberties issues involving the U.S. Patriot's Act of 2001.

Professor Jack Wing, chairman of the Center for Law and Financial Markets, appeared on WebFN to discuss what corporate America can do to restore public trust in the markets.

Professor Thomas was quoted in Daily Southtown and The Star (Alsip, IL) stories concerning Nabil al Marabh, who was arrested in September 2001 in Burbank, CA, as a suspect with ties to the September 11 attacks, but who was recently deported without any charges brought against him

Professor Bartram Brown was quoted in a Daily Southtown story about how the war on terrorism is encroaching on American civil liberties.

Professor Thomas was quoted in a Lansing Times story about reaction to President Bush's proposed National Strategy for Homeland Security.

Professor Michael Spak was quoted in Daily Times (Peking, IL) and Times Standard (Eureka, CA) stories about the Bush administration considering whether to ask Congress to ease restrictions on the military for law enforcement work inside the United States.

Professor Jerold Lavin was featured in a Glencoe News article about his decision – following a trend among other professionals – to become a high school teacher.

Professor Douglas Godfrey and Dean Krent were quoted in a Chicago Daily Law Bulletin story about a group of Chinese law students taking part in a three-week study program at Chicago-Kent.

Professor Ronald Staudt was quoted in a Chicago Daily Law Bulletin story about the Chicago Bar Foundation's fourth-annual Pro Bono and Public Service Luncheon, where he was awarded the inaugural Leonard Jay Schrager Award of Excellence. He was also mentioned in a separate Law Bulletin story about the luncheon.

The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin ran a photo a Professor Philip Hablutzel with participants in Chicago-Kent's 21st annual Conference on Not-For-Profit Organizations.

Dean Krent and Professor Bartram Brown were pictured in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin with visiting lecturer Dominic Ayine, a professor at the University of Ghana, and Robert Bennett, honorary counsel general of Ghana, at a reception held for Professor Ayine. The Chicago Defender ran a photo of Mr. Bennett and Professor Ayine from the same event.

Dean Krent was mentioned in a Chicago Daily Law Bulletin story about Illinois law schools currently led by interim deans.

Chicago-Kent students Tanya Romersa and Stephanie Engelsman, co-presidents of the Animal Rights Law Society, were quoted in a Chicago Tribune story about lawyers coming to the aid of abused animals.

Professor Richard Kling was quoted in a Chicago Tribune story about the U.S. government's intention to seize $10 million in assets from former Cicero town president Betty Loren-Maltese and five others who were convicted of defrauding the town's insurance funds of $12 million. Professor Kling was also interviewed by CLTV and WMAQ-TV about the case.

Professor Sheldon Nahmod was quoted in a Chicago Tribune story about incidents in Pennsylvania in which people have been arrested for using foul language.

The South China Morning Post ran a story about the book Professional Electronic Trading by David James Norman, director of electronic market development at the Center for Law and Financial Markets. Norman's book addresses the possibility of a global system of electronic trading.

Laurie Rosenow, senior fellow at the Institute for Science, Law and Technology, was quoted in a USA Today story about the lack of federal guidelines for stem-cell research.

Lisa Colpoys, executive director of the Illinois Technology Center for Law and the Public Interest, was quoted in a Cincinnati Inquirer story about the trend of U.S. citizens to waive their right of attorney and to defend themselves in court.

Professor Robert Laurent was a guest on WebFN to discuss what control Alan Greenspan has over Federal Reserve policy.

Professor Christopher Barlow was interviewed about ethics, business and law on the "The Law Show," a weekly program broadcast on public and community radio stations throughout the country.

The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin ran a story about Chicago-Kent's two new award programs named in honor of the late Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz ‘25: The Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Law Award and a new gift matching initiative for the Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Scholarship.

Professor Sheldon Nahmod was interviewed by BBC World Service about the Vietnamese government's condemnation of a Vietnamese actor who appeared in American films they feel portrayed Vietnam in a false light.

Professor Lori Andrews was quoted in a Chicago Tribune story about the moral and legal debate over the donations by couples of spare embryos from in vitro fertilization attempts to other couples seeking children.

Dean Henry H. Perritt, Jr., wrote an op-ed piece for the Washington Post about the lack of action by the Democratic party in challenging President Bush's call for war against Iraq.

Dean Harold J. Krent was quoted in a Chicago Sun-Times story about whether pay raises given by lame-duck governor George Ryan, on the recommendation of gubernatorial candidate and then-state's attorney Jim Ryan, violated the state constitution.

Professor Bartram Brown was a guest on WVON's "The Cliff Kelley Show" to discuss the IMF and World Bank meetings in Washington, D.C.

Dean Krent and Chicago-Kent alums Peter J. Birnbaum and Thomas A. Demetrio were pictured on the front page of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin at a Senior Council dinner at which Dean Krent announced the establishment of an Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Fellowship Endowment.

Professor Nancy Marder was interviewed on NPR's "Weekend Edition Sunday" about a referendum in North Dakota that would allow defendants to challenge the merits, validity and applicability of the laws they were charged with breaking.

Professor Lori Andrews appeared on WBBM-TV's 10 p.m. news telecast to comment on embryo adoption.

Professor Howard Eglit was interviewed on NPR's "Justice Talking" about age discrimination in the work place.

George Kalidonis, Colman Clinical Professor of Entrepreneurship at Stuart Graduate School of Business, was quoted in a Chicago Tribune story about entrepreneurship programs at Chicago-area business schools, including the Stuart School.

John Tarini, director of the Stuart School's marketing communication program, was quoted in a Modern Healthcare story about the FTC's new Internet-safety mascot, Dewie the Turtle.

Professor Marder was quoted in a Miami Daily Business Review story about whether terror attacks have made jurors friendlier toward plaintiffs or defendants.

Dean Henry H. Perritt, Jr., was quoted in a Chicago Tribune story about a Chicago attorney who has patented a software program that will allow immigration attorneys to offer green card, H-1B visa and other immigration applications online.

Professor Richard Wright was quoted in a National Law Journal story about a Supreme Court case in which the court will be interpreting the Federal Employers Liability Act of 1908 with respect to employer liability in exposing employees to asbestos.

Professor Lori Andrews was quoted in a Chicago Sun-Times story about a claim by a California fertility clinic that post-menopausal woman can safely give birth to babies by using fertilized eggs donated by younger women.

Chicago-Kent College of Law was mentioned in a Boston Globe story about law schools that are allowing military recruiters on campus after years of barring them due to the military's policy of not permitting openly gay people to serve. Chicago-Kent allowed JAG recruiters to interview on campus, but displayed posters highlighting JAG's policy on homosexuals and past discrimination against black citizens.

Dean Harold Krent was quoted in a Chicago Sun-Times story about the case of a 26-year-old Chicago woman who had her photo lifted from her online personal ad and used in advertisements for pornographic Web sites.

Professor Howard Eglit was a guest on NPR's "Justice Talking" to discuss age discrimination in the workplace.

Dean Harold J. Krent was interviewed on WTTW's "Chicago Tonight" about allegations that Governor Ryan knew his aides were destroying campaign documents in order to obstruct a federal corruption investigation into the "licenses for bribes" allegations. Professor Douglas Godfrey appeared on WMAQ-TV's evening news about the federal investigation.

Professor Keith Black was quoted in a Business Finance Magazine article about recent revelations of unethical transactions between CFOs and business analysts and how these revelations are changing the way the two parties work with each other.

Professor Philip Hablutzel was interviewed on WFLD-TV's "Fox News", WBEZ's "848", CLTV, and the WLS-TV evening news about the bankruptcy of United Airlines.

Professor Richard Kling was interviewed on WLS-TV and quoted in a Chicago Sun-Times story about the possibility of gubernatorial clemency of inmates on Illinois' Death Row.

Professor Joel Goldhar was quoted in a Chicago Tribune story about the current phenomenon of "overcapacity" in the U.S. economy, which occurs when a period of high growth and expansion of production is followed by a period of slow growth and a drop in demand. The story also ran in the Orlando Sentinel and other Tribune-owned papers.
