The team is coached by third-year Chicago-Kent students Betsy Gates and Craig Stern. This is the second time in three years that a Chicago-Kent team has advanced to the tournament's finals, which will be held April 2 to 4 in Chicago.

Chicago-Kent faced teams from Chapman University, Emory University and the University of Cincinnati in preliminary rounds and defeated the University of Oklahoma in the semifinals before beating the University of Florida in the final round. The students argued a hypothetical appeal to the United States Supreme Court related to the War Powers Act.

The National Appellate Advocacy Competition, sponsored by the American Bar Association's Law Student Division, involved more than 190 teams from 110 law schools throughout the United States. Twenty-four teams will compete in the finals.

Winning Chicago-Kent team member Erin Duncomb, a second-year student, earned her undergraduate degree in business administration with a major in marketing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Teammate Amanda Hillmann, also a second-year student, is a graduate of Loyola University-Chicago with a double major in women's studies and political science. Teammate Allison Sues, another second-year student, graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she majored in print journalism.
