CBA honors three Chicago-Kent alums for public service

Chicago-Kent is proud to announce that three of its alums, Judge Ilana Diamond Rovner '66, Peter J. Birnbaum '83 and Thomas A. Demetrio '73, were recently honored by the Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Lend-a-Hand Program at an awards luncheon on July 28. All three alums are members of Chicago-Kent's Board of Overseers.

The program is a joint project of the Chicago Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Foundation dedicated to the lasting memory and generosity of Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz, a 1925 Chicago-Kent graduate. The program aims to provide disadvantaged youth in Chicago communities with the guidance and support they need to succeed in school and in life. Since its inception, the program has given more than $400,000 in grants to deserving one-on-one tutor/mentor programs and recruited hundreds of attorney mentors.

Judge Rovner, who in 1992 became the first woman appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, received the Inaugural Judge Marovitz Mentoring Award, given to a member of the bench who exemplifies the spirit of Judge Marovitz by following in his footsteps and mentoring others. The award was presented by Lend-a-Hand Executive Board Chair James Morsch.

Mr. Birnbaum, president and chief executive officer of Attorney's Title Guaranty Fund Inc. (ATG) and past president of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago, received the Making a Difference Award. Mr. Birnbaum and the staff at ATG have supported the kindergarten class of Byrd Academy at Cabrini Green for the past 15 years. Gary Caplan, Lend-a-Hand executive board member, presented the award and was joined by Kyron Shaw, Mr. Birnbaum's Little Brother of seven years.

Mr. Demetrio, who essentially founded the Lend-a-Hand Program during his tenure as president of the CBA and remains the chair of its Leadership Board, was given an award in special recognition of his 10 years of leadership and of his vision of a program that could make a difference in underprivileged children's lives through mentoring.
