Fleischman Family Award for Excellence in Criminal Clinic is established at Chicago-Kent College of Law

Award honors outstanding students in criminal defense clinic and recognizes three generations of the family’s contributions to the Chicago legal community

CHICAGO–July 9, 2008--Chicago-Kent alumni Jack A. and Sidney Z. Fleischman have established the Fleischman Family Award for Excellence in Criminal Clinic at their alma mater to recognize outstanding students in the criminal defense section of the Chicago-Kent Law Offices. In establishing the award, the Fleischmans also pay tribute to the contributions made to Chicago’s legal community by their late grandfather, the Honorable Philip A. Fleischman, and their father, Marshall A. Fleischman.

Judge Philip Fleischman served in the Cook County Circuit Court’s Law Division from 1970 to 1985. Prior to his election to the bench, he served as a master in chancery. Judge Fleischman was also a founder of the B’nai Jacob Synagogue in West Rogers Park and a past chair of the Lawyers Division of the Combined Jewish Appeal. He served as president of the 50th Ward Regular Democratic Organization from 1958 to 1970.

Marshall Fleischman practiced municipal, zoning, and real estate law for more than 25 years and now works in real estate. Mr. Fleischman was an assistant Cook County state’s attorney in the Criminal Felony Trial Division from 1963 to 1966. Prior to that, he worked for the city of Chicago as an assistant corporation counsel working on zoning matters.

Jack and Sidney Fleischman are identical twins who participated in Chicago-Kent’s criminal law clinic before they earned their law degrees in 1987. The Fleischman brothers currently are partners in their own criminal defense law firm, Fleischman & Fleischman PA, located in Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach, Florida. Jack began his career with the Public Defender’s Office in Palm Beach County. Sidney worked with the Cook County and Broward County State’s Attorney’s Offices before entering private practice with his brother.

The Fleischman Family Award, which includes a cash stipend, will be made at the end of the academic year to students who have demonstrated dedication to the criminal defense litigation program and who have provided “zealous advocacy” on behalf of the program’s clients. Recipients are selected by Chicago-Kent faculty who teach in the law school’s certificate program in criminal litigation.

“In addition to the financial award--which is significant to law students graduating with extraordinary financial obligations as they begin their legal careers--the Fleischman Family Award rekindles a Law Office spirit that existed when Jack and Sid were Chicago-Kent students and contributed to that spirit,” said criminal defense attorney and clinical professor of law Richard S. Kling, who taught the Fleischman brothers. “The twins are role models--respected members of the bar and of our alumni family--whom Chicago-Kent students will try to emulate both professionally and personally.”
