The National Moot Court Competition, sponsored by the American College of Trial Lawyers and the New York City Bar Association, is the nation’s oldest and largest appellate advocacy competition. Law schools from Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana competed in the regional tournament. That tournament’s top two teams, Chicago-Kent and Loyola University Chicago School of Law, will join 26 teams from 13 other regions for the national finals in New York February 2-5, 2009.

Chicago-Kent is the defending champion of the National Moot Court Competition. In 2008, the Chicago-Kent team of Joanna Brinkman ’09, Lalania Gilkey-Johnson ’08, and Rachel Moran ’08 won the national title. This is the fourth consecutive year and the tenth time in the last 13 years Chicago-Kent has advanced to the national finals in New York.

"I am extremely pleased with our showing in the regional tournament and proud that we will have the opportunity to defend our national championship," said Chicago-Kent professor Kent D. Streseman, director of the law school’s Ilana Diamond Rovner Program in Appellate Advocacy.

The competition problem raised issues of the constitutionality of a federal law designed to protect religious groups from discrimination and the scope of a federal law governing special education.

Winning team member Brody Dawson, a third-year student, is president of the Chicago-Kent Moot Court Honor Society. Dawson earned her undergraduate degree in history from Davidson College in North Carolina. Teammate Andrew Booth, also a third-year student, graduated cum laude from Wagner College in New York, where he majored in international affairs. Teammate Betsy Gates is a third-year student who graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a double major in zoology and environmental studies. Gates won Chicago-Kent’s Ilana Diamond Rovner Award for Outstanding Appellate Advocacy in 2007.
