IIT Chicago-Kent Professor Sungjoon Cho selected as member of Korea-EU Free Trade Agreement Arbitration Panel Roster

CHICAGO--January 19, 2012--IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law Professor Sungjoon Cho has been selected by the Korea-EU Trade Commission to become a Member of Arbitration Panel Roster under Chapter 14 of the Korea-European Union Free Trade Agreement (Korea-EU FTA). Professor Cho's term begins immediately.

The list of fifteen arbitrators has been established by Korea-EU FTA. Five members of the panel are selected by Korea, five by the EU, and five by non-party countries. Chapter 14 of the agreement provides a dispute settlement mechanism under which a panel of arbitrators is charged with resolving trade disputes that arise under the agreement. In disputes brought for arbitration, parties submit their briefs to the panel which holds open hearings on the case. The arbitration panel should deliver a legally binding ruling within 120 days after its establishment.

Prof. Ralph Brill

Professor Cho, a member of the IIT Chicago-Kent faculty since 2003, is an authority on international economic law. He teaches courses in international trade law, international law, international business transactions, and comparative law.

Professor Cho has also written numerous books and articles on international economic law. He has taught at the University of Lausanne, the University of San Diego's Summer Program in Mexico, the Institute of European Studies of Macau, Catholic University of Lublin, Seoul National University, and KDI School of Public Policy and Management in Korea. Professor Cho has held appointments as a Clark Byse Fellow at Harvard Law School, a Research Fellow with Harvard Law School's East Asian Legal Studies Program, and an Emil Noël Fellow at New York University Law School. He currently is an IIT Chicago-Kent Norman and Edna Freehling Scholar.

From 1994 to 1996, before coming to the United States, Professor Cho represented the government of the Republic of Korea in negotiations under the World Trade Organization and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Professor Cho currently serves as adviser on international affairs and global industrial cooperation to the South Korean government's Ministry of Knowledge Economy and as a consultant to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He has also served as a non-resident international advisor to the South Korean Minister of Strategy and Finance.

Professor Cho earned his LL.B. from Seoul National University in 1989, his M.P.A. degree from Seoul National University in 1994 and his LL.M. in international economic law from the University of Michigan Law School in 1997. In 2002, he received his S.J.D. (Doctor of Juridical Science) degree from Harvard Law School. He is a member of the bar of the state of New York. He also holds a license to practice law in Korea.
