The Erie court decides that the law of the forum state should be
applicable to all cases heard by federal courts sitting in diversity jurisdiction
within a state to create uniformity, stop the problems that arose due to
the Swift decision, and make sure that federal courts do not overstep
their power in creating a body of federal substantive law (federal courts
do not hold such power).
