Hypothetical CA rule for service of process on file-sharers

§ 101

In any action by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) or the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for copyright infringement brought against an individual alleged to have downloaded any musical work or audio-visual work from a file-sharing network, service of original process may be made as follows:

(a) by emailing the summons and complaint to the defendant;

(b) in the case of a defendant who is a full- or part-time student at any university, by emailing a copy of the summons and complaint to the Dean of Student affairs or equivalent officer of that university;

(c) by posting the summons and complaint on the defendant's Facebook "wall" with a picture of a dungeon with an inmate dressed in rags; or

(d) by posting the summons and complaint on any public website maintained by the RIAA or MPAA, behind a link identifying the defendant by name in boldfaced type not less that 14 points in size.
