Faculty NewsAn Evening Event with Lori Andrews at the Chicago Historical Society February 27On Tuesday, February 27, from 6:00-7:00 p.m., law professor and bioethicist Lori Andrews will host her first nationwide appearance inaugurating the release of her newest book, Body Bazaar: The Market for Human Tissue in the Biotechnology Age (co-authored with Dorothy Nelkin). The public is invited hear Andrews and other experts discuss the scientific, ethical and legal issues surrounding the Chicago Historical Society’s genetic testing project, “Wet With Blood,” for authentication of President Lincoln’s artifacts. Part of the Historical Society’s collection at issue is a cloak allegedly worn by Mary Todd Lincoln the night her husband was assassinated that may contain his blood. Questions to be addressed include whether it is appropriate to perform genetic tests on Abraham Lincoln’s DNA that might reveal the presence of diseases or disorders and whether such tests would violate the privacy of existing family members. The event will be held at the Chicago Historical Society, located at Clark Street and North Avenue and is free. It is sponsored by the Chicago Historical Society (www.chicagohistory.org) and the Institute for Science, Law & Technology, Illinois Institute of Technology (www.kentlaw.edu/islt).
