Order of the Coif Lecture

Please mark your calendars for Monday, March 22, for the Order of the Coif Lecture by Dr. Amartya Sen on "Rational Choice and Law." The lecture will be held in the Auditorium at 3:00pm. Dr. Sen received the 1998 Nobel Prize in economics; he is now Master of Trinity College (Cambridge, England) and professor emeritus from Harvard.

Rational choice theory is the foundation of the law and economics movement, which has had tremendous influence in the legal academy and the making of law and public policy. According to rational choice theory, individuals make decisions among ranked preferences, creating rankings to maximize the difference between benefits and costs. Dr. Sen's lecture will confront the relation between law and his path-breaking work in philosophy, economics, and political science.

This lecture is supported by funding, after application, from the Order of the Coif. The Order of the Coif is a national legal honor society whose purposes are to promote and recognize significant accomplishment in the study and advancement of the law. Chicago-Kent was admitted to the Order of the Coif in recognition of its strides in scholarship, teaching, and contributions to the community of American law schools. Each year, approximately ten percent of our students are inducted into the Order of the Coif based on their success in the study of law.

A reception will follow the lecture.
