"Give Thanks America"

Compaq Computer Corporation is conducting a nationwide altruistic initiative, in cooperation with the Department of Defense, called "Give Thanks America." The initiative includes videotaping and sending digital streaming video messages to military forces currently deployed in harm's way or elsewhere, as well as to those American heroes who protect our freedoms at home -- firefighters and police officers.

Families of military personnel and the general public will be able to record digital video messages at special sites in 11 cities: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Colorado Springs, Dallas, Houston, New York, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

Chicago Details:

  • Friday December 7 - Sunday December 9
  • Harold Washington Public Library on State Street
  • Friday 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
  • Sunday 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

Compaq Presario 5000T desktops with the My Movie Studio video editing solution and Logitech Quickcam Pro 3000 cameras will be deployed at these sites. Families will have three minutes for their message, while the general public will be limited to a 30-second message of thanks and support. The military in particular has requested that mail not be sent overseas due to recent security concerns, so this is an excellent alternative for the American public to show their support.

Messages will be edited using Compaq's My Movie Studio, then uploaded at www.givethanksamerica.com, where deployed troops and fire and police personnel will be able to access the messages at any time. Family messages may be sent directly via a provided e-mail address to the family relative who is serving in the armed forces abroad.

The Web solution is being provided by Sorenson Media. Digital Island is providing its streaming media infrastructure. Additional hardware (servers, switches, racks and power supplies) is being provided by Compaq.

Announcement of the national initiative is planned for December 3 or 4 in New York and Washington, D.C., where mayors, military officials, fire fighters and police officers will be the first to record their video messages. Phase I will launch in the other nine cities on December 7 and run through December 9. For further information contact, Victoria Westin at 312.475.5902.
