November 26: Fourth Annual Whitney Young Coat Drive and Alumni Basketball Game

The alumni of Whitney Young will be hosting their Fourth Annual Whitney Young Coat Drive and Alumni Basketball Game on Saturday November 26, from noon to 4 p.m. The inaugural event was held in 2013 and was launched by Whitney alums Chiquira Showers ‘05 and Jelani Floyd ‘06. Floyd, a current third year law student at Chicago-Kent College of Law, hosts the event through his non profit organization, The Atypical Sports & Learning Foundation. The Atypical Sports & Learning Foundation’s mission is to expose youth to atypical sports as a means to further academic achievement.

Each year the coat drive event has grown tremendously and has increased exposure for the initiatives of Floyd’s foundation. Last year’s event featured an alumni basketball matchup between alums of Chicago Public League powerhouse boy’s basketball programs from Whitney Young and Simeon. The event exceeded expectations, and over 800 coats were donated at the drive.

The coat drive’s mission is to help those less fortunate brace for another brutal Chicago winter by urging our guests to bring *new or slightly used* winter coats to donate, while reconnecting with the community, friends, and family over a competitive game of basketball featuring alums from the most prestigious high school basketball program in Chicago. Last year’s alumni basketball game featured numerous former NCAA Division One basketball players, including former Mr. Basketball, Calvin Brock.

Additionally, the coat drive has a lofty goal this year, as Showers and Floyd would like to take things a step further and purchase new winter coats for an entire first-grade classroom at Howe Elementary on Chicago’s Westside.

Please spread the word, come out, and support a great cause and event. Everyone is welcome! All students are welcome!!! This coat drive was established to help those in need as well as to unite the Chicago Public School and Whitney Young network.

Your financial support is needed and greatly appreciated to help us purchase new coats for those most in need. You may donate now at www.gofundme.com/wycoatdrive16

We need everyone to come out and support as we strive to bring positive energy to our community and beyond.

Thanks so much for your support.

Chicagoans till Chicago ends.
