Headlines for the Week of March 11, 2013

Student Bar Association and Women in Law

March 13: "Effective Networking: Tips for the New Lawyer and Seasoned Professional" panel discussion and cocktail reception

The Society of Women in Law and the Student Bar Association will be hosting the WBAI's Young Lawyers Committee panel discussion on networking on March 13 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium. Panelists include men and women from a variety of practice areas. Learn networking tips and put them to use at a cocktail reception immediately following the discussion.

Barrister's Ball Ticket Sales

Barrister's Ball tickets will be on sale for the entire student body in the Chicago-Kent bookstore starting Monday, March 25. Tickets will remain on sale for two weeks, through Friday, April 5, or until they sell out. The event will be held Saturday, April 13, 2013, from 7:00pm-12:00am on the Odyssey Boat Cruise. Tickets will be $75 each and will cover dining and entertainment for the entire evening: boat cruise, cocktails, dinner, dancing, and endless entertainment! Make sure to get your ticket before they sell out. You won't want to miss the biggest social event of the year!

SBA Awards Nominations

Its that time of year again to start recognizing all of the outstanding accomplishments of your fellow Chicago-Kent students and staff! The SBA will start accepting nominations for SBA Awards beginning the week after spring break, March 25, and will continue to accept nominations until Friday, April 12. The SBA is looking for nominations from the student body for the following awards:

  • Staff Member of the Year;
  • Adjunct Professor of the Year;
  • Professor of the Year;
  • Ralph Brill Award (which will be awarded to a staff member, faculty member, or alumnus/alumna who has graduated at least 10 years before the award is given and has shown exemplary service and accomplishment); and
  • Student Organization of the Year

Nominations shall consist of a letter stating the reasons for the nomination, specifically referring to the candidate's law school activities, outside legal activities, and service. Once all nominations are received, the Awards Committee will select up to three nominees for each award, and the student body will vote. Please email all award nominations to Sasha Kakabadse at

Spring Inter-APALSA Social Event

We have set the date for the Spring Inter-APALSA Social. It will be on Friday, March 29, 2013 from 7pm to 10pm at English (444 N LaSalle). 3 Hours of open bar for $20 presale and $25 at the door. Here is the Facebook page. Make sure to invite your friends, coworkers, and any attorneys you know.

APALSA Bake Sale

APALSA will be having a bake sale on March 27, 2013 from 10am to 5pm and we need volunteers for manning the table and also making baked goods. Our lovely 1L Section Reps have planned this fundraiser so please help them out and support APALSA!

Immigration Law Society and International Law Student Association

March 28: Annual networking event

On Thursday, March 28, the Immigration Law Society and the International Law Student Association are holding their annual networking event on the 10th floor, which will be preceded by career panels on immigration and international law. Additional details are forthcoming.

Sports and Entertainment Law Society

Baseball Arbitration Event

Please join the Sports & Entertainment Law Society on Tuesday, March 12 from 12-1 p.m. in room 570 for a Baseball Arbitration Event.

Chicago-Kent Baseball Arbitration Team members Lee Oliff, Alex Reich, and Brian Crump, along with team advisor Professor Eldon Ham, will present a tutorial on arbitration basics. In addition, they will present information on the Tulane National Baseball Arbitration Competition, where the team placed 3rd in 2012. Professor Ham plans to continue Chicago-Kent's participation in the future.
