Journal of Environmental and Energy Law (JEEL)

JEEL is seeking applicants for its executive board and for staff editing positions

JEEL is looking for a managing editor, a submissions editor, a research editor/webmaster, an executive articles editor, and associate editors. Please send a résumé, unofficial transcript, and brief statement of interest to the editor-in-chief at aorr1@kentlaw.iit.edu.

Position descriptions are as follows:

Managing Editor (ME)

The ME's primary responsibilities are managing the schedule for the exec board to ensure the issue publishes on time, working with the EAEs to make sure the editing gets finished, and approving final edits of material and formatting material to be published. The ME is responsible for maintaining and improving JEEL's editing style guide. The ME also plays a large role in selecting and managing staff members. The ME will work with the EIC to format final articles and ensure final publication of JEEL.

Submissions Editor (SE)

The SE is the first actor in the article editing process and gets the entire process rolling by extending offers of publication to prospective authors. The SE maintains communication with accepted and prospective authors, including those who contact JEEL directly through email at jeel@kentlaw.iit.edu or through our account with ExpressO. The SE completes an initial review for each submission, including running the article through a Lexis program to assess any plagiarism risk posed by the article, and consults the exec board as necessary. The SE then sends an acceptance or rejection email as necessary. If accepted, the SE emails the author to confirm acceptance and cc's the ME and the EIC, who will send a publication agreement to the author to finalize article acceptance.

Executive Articles Editors (EAE)

The EAEs manage the editing process on an individual article basis. Once the article is accepted and the ME assigns the article to one of the EAEs, the EAE contacts his/her AE team, who edit for comprehension, grammar and citations. After each AE returns his/her edits, the EAE compiles all of the edits into one document and sends it to the ME. The ME then reviews the article to do a final edit and sends the edited article to the EIC, who will contact the author about reviewing and correcting the piece as necessary. If there are any questions or problems discovered during the editing process, the EAE will contact the ME, who will consult with the SE and the EIC about addressing those with the author or potentially withdrawing from the publication agreement in certain situations such as plagiarism discoveries.

Research Editor (RE)

The RE is in charge of managing the "In the News" section of the website. The RE prepares short news items for publication on the website and works with a webmaster to ensure the website is working properly. The idea of the "In the News" section is to encourage students to get involved, and continue to promote JEEL's online journal even when the journal is months away from publishing.

Webmaster (WM)

The WM manages the website and works with the EIC to ensure JEEL maintains optimal online presentation and makes upgrades and design changes as necessary in consultation with the rest of the exec board. The WM handles publication of issues and also works with the RE to make the "In the News" section as visually and technologically appealing as possible.

Associate Editors (AE)

AEs work in editing teams under the supervision of an EAE to edit a portion of an article for comprehension, grammar and citations.
