Join us this Tuesday for this semester’s first APALSA Attorney Roundtable! These roundtable events give you the opportunity to come participate in an informal and candid discussion with a well-established Asian-American attorney in the Chicago area. 

Our first guest is Rudy Figueroa, the general counsel of Mitsui Rail Co. (MRC), a subsidiary of the Fortune Global 500 company, Mitsui Group.  Rudy is a Chicago-Kent alum and a supporter of C-K APALSA.  Rudy runs MRC's externship program, which is exclusive to C-K students.  We have no doubt you will learn a lot from Rudy's success story so please join us this Tuesday.

Please join APALSA in celebrating the historic appointments of three distinguished Asian-American judges: 

Judge Edmond E. Chang
, U.S. District Court Judge for the Northern District of Illinois, is the first Asian American Article III judge in the Midwest. He is also the youngest Article III judge in the nation.  

Judge Young B. Kim
, U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Illinois, is the first Asian American federal magistrate judge in the Midwest and only the second Korean American federal magistrate judge in U.S. history. 

Judge Laura C. Liu
, Circuit Judge of Cook County, is the first Chinese American Circuit Court judge in Cook County. She is also the first Chinese American female judge in the State of Illinois.

FINNEGAN DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP

The firm of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP announces the Finnegan Diversity Scholarship. This scholarship will provide financial support to qualified minority law students who have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing a career in Intellectual Property Law. The scholarship award of $15,000 may be applied to costs associated with normal tuition; usual fees (such as, but not limited to, student activity fees; law school or university fees); and a patent bar review course. The scholarship recipient will also accept an offer to join the firm as a 2012 summer associate in one of the firm's domestic offices (Atlanta, Cambridge, Palo Alto, Reston or Washington). Students currently completing their first year full-time (or second year part-time) are invited to apply. The award will be applied to education costs for the following academic year (2011-2012), and may be renewed for one additional year if the scholar accepts an associate offer upon successful completion of the Finnegan summer associate program, maintains a grade point average of 3.0 or better in law school, and is otherwise in good standing. 2011 AABA SCHOLARSHIP

One of the goals of the AABA Law Foundation is to provide financial assistance to Asian Pacific American law students who have demonstrated academic excellence and social leadership.  The AABA Law Foundation continues to award annual scholarships to law students who have demonstrated a commitment to serving the needs of the Chicago-area Asian Pacific American community, and who will continue to serve the needs of the Chicago-area Asian Pacific American communities through pro bono, public interest, and/or public service legal work in the future.  In 2011, the AABA Law Foundation intends to award two scholarships of $2,500 each to law students who have exemplified that commitment.

2011 DRI DIVERSITY LAW STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

DRI announces its annual Law Student Diversity Scholarship program open to incoming second and third-year African American, Hispanic, Asian, Pan Asian and Native American students. Incoming second and third-year female law students are also eligible, regardless of race or ethnicity. Incoming second and third-year law students who also come from backgrounds that would add to the cause of diversity, regardless of race or gender are eligible to apply. Students who are members of the American Association for Justice (AAJ), Law School or Law Student members of AAJ or students otherwise affiliated with or employed by AAJ are not eligible for DRI Law Student Diversity Scholarships. To qualify for this scholarship, candidate must be a full-time student or evening student who has completed two-thirds or more of the total credit hours requirement for a degree by the applicant’s law school. The goal of these scholarships is to provide financial assistance to two worthy law students from ABA accredited law schools in order to promote, in a tangible way, the DRI Diversity Statement in Principle.

Two scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each will be awarded to applicants who best meet the following criteria:
  • Demonstrated academic excellence
  • Service to the profession
  • Service to the community
  • Service to the cause of diversity
