ÒFreedom's JournalÓ

Chicago-Kent College of Law, Black Law Students Association Newsletter

Freedom's Journal was the first Black owned and operated newspaper published in the United States. It provided international, national, and regional information on current events and contained editorials declaiming slavery, lynching, and other injustices. The Journal also published biographies of prominent African Americans and listings of births, deaths, and marriages in the African American community in New York. Freedom's Journal circulated in 11 states, the District of Columbia, Haiti, Europe, and Canada.  It was published weekly in New York City from 1827 to 1829.

The academic success of our Midwest BLSA members  is one of our top priorities this year.  For this reason, your Midwest NBLSA Board is working hard to provide you with the most valuable and beneficial Academic Retreat possible.  Speakers and workshops planned will cover very important topics, including:

  • How to most effectively create outlines throughout the semester so you have a workable product at the start of the finals period that can aid you in mastering the application of the law to fact patterns, rather than scrambling to learn the law right before a test
  • The art of test preparation and how to most effectively prepare for a law school exam
  • Creating checklists and mini-outlines that are helpful on exams
  • How to improve your writing on law school exams and write that A-level answer
  • A luncheon with representatives from national law firms who will discuss the importance of grades and what they look for in an ideal candidate
  • And much more!

Lyric Of The Week:  ÒBlack people unite and let's all get down; Gotta have what? Gotta have that love. Peace and understanding, One God, one light. One man, one voice, one mic
Black people unite come on and do it right!Ó

Quote to Ponder:  "You can't lead people if you love people, and you can't save people without serving people."-Dr. Cornell West

Black History Moments:

August 31st 1920, the Universal Negro Improvement Association (led by Marcus Garvey) concluded the First international convention at Madison Square Garden in New York City. During event the 20,000 members of the UNIA in attendance promulgated the "Declaration of Rights of the Negro Peoples of the World", and elected the leaders of the UNIA as "leaders for the Negro people of the world". Further, they stated "We proclaim the 31st day of August of each year to be an international holiday to be observed by all Negroes."

On September 9, 1739, twenty Enslaved Africans in South Carolina led by Jemmy, an Angolan slave, met near the Stono River, twenty miles southwest of Charleston. They marched down the roadway with a banner that read "Liberty!"—they chanted the same word in unison. At the Stono Bridge they seized weapons from a store and killed the two storekeepers. They raised a flag and proceeded towards St. Augustine. On the way, they gathered more recruits, their number now close to 100. They burned the houses of slave owners. South Carolina's Lieutenant Governor, William Bull, and four of his friends ran in to the group on horseback.
