Bring Friends!
This is a great time to get involved in ELS.
There will be a sign-up sheet
at the meeting for Sierra Club Lobby Day (see below). It
is very important that we get an estimate of
how many people are interested. If you think you might
want to go, please sign up at the meeting or respond
to this e-mail ASAP. Thanks!
A big 'thank you' to ELS
Member Shannon Beebe, for planning this
event.
Lobby Day with Sierra Club!
ELS is mobilizing a group of students to accompany
Sierra Club on Lobby Day. ELS members who attended Lobby Day
last year said it was a unique experience that they really
enjoyed.
This year, Lobby Day will be
on Wednesday, March 10th and Thursday, March
11th.
Example Schedule
3/10: 4:00pm -7:00pm - Amtrak or drive to
Springfield
3/10: 7:00pm and after - Dinner and
briefing at the hotel. Jen (the organizer) and Jack
Darin (the head of the Sierra's Chicago office and
professional lobbyist) will give a presentation on how to
lobby, brief you on 3-5 issues, and divide us into
groups of 3-4 based on constituency 3/11: 7:30am -
9:00am - Breakfast, meet
politicians, discuss bills
3/11: 9:00am - 1:00pm - Hit the floor. We
will visit the Capital and Federal Buildings, trying
to speak with congressman before lunch
3/11: 12:00pm - 1:00pm - Over 100 organizations,
including Sierra Club, will attend lunch together
3/11: 1:00pm - 3:00pm - Calling congressman
out of session to discuss bills between votes 3/11:
3:00pm - 4:00pm - Final recap
Adjusted Cost
ELS is working with SBA to provide funding for the event.
Depending on interest, we may also hold an ELS fundraiser to
suppliment cost.
We anticipate the cost to members will be between
$20 -$45, depending on interest and fundraising - a
bargain, when you consider the actual cost (below).
Actual Cost
For $70, Sierra Club will offer a shared hotel room,
$115 for a single room. Dinner,
breakfast, and lunch are included. Amtrak tickets
are $18+tax each way. However, many ELS Members have offered
to car pool.
Cost/person: $70 (hotel, meals) + $40 (Amtrak - no
carpool) = $110.
2009-2010 T-Shirt Design Contest!
Submission Deadline: Noon on March 12, 2010
