Week of February 8, 2009

The Student Hurricane Network (SHN) is a national association dedicated to providing long-term assistance to communities affected by Hurricane Katrina. SHN works with law students and administrators from all over the United States to create and coordinate volunteer opportunities for law students in the Gulf Coast.

Spring Break Trip
March 14 - March 22, 2009

This coming March, we will take about 16 students to New Orleans to volunteer on projects related to hurricane recovery and social justice.

To secure your spot on the trip, you will need to submit a nonrefundable $25 deposit to Gwynne Kizer. Spots are available on a first come, first serve basis. The $25 deposit will be used to pay for transportation expenses.

Once you have submitted your deposit, you also need to:

(1) complete the following form regarding the logistics of our trip:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pcnBneoJWcteYuJ58nOzQYg

AND

(2) go to this website - https://spreadsheets.google.com/embeddedform?key=pcnBneoJWctfF6AUI8qnnLA to register with and indicate your preferences to SHN. (Be sure you indicate that you’re only willing to do work in New Orleans because we can’t provide transportation or housing in MS/TX for this trip.)

If you have any questions, please feel free to email one of the SHN board members.

Leadership opportunity
We need a couple people to serve as Chicago-Kent representatives on the Student Hurricane Network’s Membership Calls.

These calls are a great way to learn more about public interest and recovery work in the Gulf Coast. They are also an opportunity to make connections with students from across the country who are doing public interest work. In the past, some people who participated in these calls have found new ways to get involved with SHN. For example, some learned about internship and job opportunities in the Gulf Coast. Others have helped create or lead new projects in the Gulf Coast. Still others have gone on to join the Student Hurricane Network's National Advisory Board. Contact Gwynne at gkizer@kentlaw.edu if you'd like more information.
