Message from the Intellectual Property Law Program Director In May 2002, the Faculty approved changes to the requirements for obtaining a Certificate in Intellectual Property Law. These new requirements do NOT apply to students already in their second year or beyond by May 2002. For these students, the old requirements will apply. We believe that these new requirements will further strengthen the national reputation of the Chicago-Kent Intellectual Property Program. They reflect both the enhanced role of intellectual property in modern commerce and the broader demands that are now placed upon the intellectual property practitioner. Chicago-Kent will, we hope, solidify its reputation as the school where intellectual property students not only learn the basic rules of intellectual property law, but also understand the broader business and social context in which these rules are applied. Students who have been following the advice of our intellectual property faculty in their course selection will, we believe, satisfy the credit requirements without modification of their course selection. Students now beginning their first or second year must, of course, fulfill the new Capstone Experience requirement. But this Capstone Experience is one which -- whether fulfilled through a clinical experience, an externship, or by taking the new Strategies in Intellectual Property Law course -- should substantially enhance every student's intellectual property education. And it is one that we know employers will value. To review the new requirements, visit the Program web page http://www.kentlaw.edu/depts/ipp/rule.html If you have questions about the requirements or the program, please feel free to contact me. ++++++++++++++++++ |
