Over the next few weeks look out for LELS Exec Board Members offering raffle tickets for sale. Professor César Rosado has offered to give an informal talk to the Labor and Employment Law Society about his ongoing research project on labor law enforcement in Chile. While the topic of his talk does focus on labor law, it is also relevant to many other areas of law.
Prof. Rosado will have slides and music, so it promises to be a good time! We will also have drinks and sweets to make it even more enticing!

On Tuesday, March 30, the LELS is hosting attorneys from the ABA's section on Labor and Employment Law to talk about a variety of topics.
The panel will include:

- Lori L. Deem – Attorney, Abrahamson, Vorachek & Levinson
- Jacalyn J. Zimmerman – Chair, Illinois Labor Relations Board
- Grady B. Murdock – Shareholder, Littler Mendelson
The panelists will discuss career opportunities in labor and employment, substantive areas in the field, the value of professional membership in both the ABA and Section on Labor and Employment Law, and much more! In addition, the highly desired FREE book on labor and employment law will be distributed to all those who attend! I have attended this program twice and love the free book offer!
The program will be in room 370 from noon to 1:30pm. The lunch will be from Goodwin's restaurant and is always a crowd pleaser!

- February 15 | 8:00 a.m. | Chicago-Kent College of Law - 9th Annual Seventh Circuit NELA Conference
NELA (the National Employment Lawyers Association) is a group of several thousand lawyers who usually represent employees in employment law-related matters. NELA/Illinois's Seventh Circuit Conference, particularly the substantive sessions on developments during the last year and on discovery, are always fascinating for anyone interested in employment law. Chicago-Kent faculty and students may attend free of charge, but NELA/Illinois needs advance registration so that they know how many handouts, etc. to make.
Registering for the conference does not obligate you to stay for the entire day. Students, remember this is also a useful networking opportunity if you are interested in employee-side work.

Exec Board meetings are open to all LELS membership, so if you want to be in on the planning stage for the spring events you are invited. Please RSVP if you can join us [sschumann@kentlaw.edu].
We have a lot of up coming events to get set up for, so bring your ideas and we can trouble shoot through the list. Mark Berardi is going to need a rough estimate on what we want appropriated to each event, and he needs to submit the budget by the end of next week. That is pretty easy to do, but we need to figure out how many dates we can pull off and maintain our law student sanity level.
Because it is afternoon I will be bringing some light refreshments - danishes and ice tea for everyone.

November 22 | 6:00 p.m. | Candidacy Platforms Due
The Labor and Employment Law Society is holding elections this month for two positions on the LELS board: President and Secretary.
Everyone interested in running for these positions is asked to submit brief candidacy platforms summarizing their interest, qualifications and ideas for the job.
The candidacy platforms should be e-mailed to LELS@kentlaw.edu by 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 22.
An election will be conducted via e-mail beginning on November 23. (More details to come.)
Below are descriptions of the duties for both the President and Secretary. The terms run until the end of the Fall 2010 semester.
President
The President shall call LELS meetings, coordinate the operation and direction of LELS including, but not limited to, programs (panels, speakers, socials, debates, etc.) and committee assignments. The President serves as a liaison between LELS and the Chicago-Kent Student Bar Association (“SBA”) and the administration. The President shall only cast a vote in an election, matter for discussion, or proposed amendment to the LELS constitution, in the event of a tie.
Secretary
The Secretary shall compile, maintain, and distribute the minutes of meetings and the records of the LELS. The Secretary shall keep a current list of members and work with the Technology Director to ensure that the LELS membership directory on the website is current. The Secretary shall provide ‘back-up’ for the Technology Director in posting announcements on The Record and the Student Organizations Calendar. The Secretary shall work with the Alumni Liaison to maintain a list of alumni members.

November 24 | 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. | Chicago-Kent Courtroom - Unfair Labor Practice Hearing
The Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA) will hold a hearing in an unfair labor practice case in the Chicago-Kent courtroom on November 24, 2009. The FLRA administers the Federal Service Labor Management Relations Statute, the statute that is the counterpart to the National Labor Relations Act for federal government employees, unions and agencies.
The case that is scheduled to be tried here is brought by the FLRA’s Chicago Regional Office against the Federal Aviation Administration. The case involves solicitation and distribution of union literature at the FAA Regional Office in Des Plaines. The Authority follows the private sector rules on overly broad no-solicitation and distribution rules as being a ULP. See GSA, 26 FLRA 719.

What better way to celebrate the American workforce than by supporting LELS's Labor Day Bake Sale. The bake sale will be held, ironically, the Wednesday after Labor Day, aka September 9, 2009.
- September 15 | 5:00-5:50 p.m. - Dinner with LELS
Join LELS exec board members for an inexpensive, Dutch treat dinner at Potbelly's. We'll meet in the Kent Lobby at 5:00 p.m. and walk over to Clinton and Jackson. We will be back at school in time for 6:00 p.m. classes.

The Labor and Employment Law Program is having a Welcome and Welcome Back pizza party on Wednesday, September 16 at 4:15 p.m. (until 5:30 but the pizza usually goes fast) in room 590. Come and enjoy pizza and other refreshments, mingle with your classmates who share your interests, meet with labor/employment law faculty and learn about the exciting programs going on in labor and employment law at Chicago-Kent. No need to rsvp. Just show up.
- September 17 | ILW Conference: Federal Sector Labor Relations
Chicago-Kent’s Institute for Law and the Workplace sponsors annual conferences on Federal Sector Labor Relations Law and Illinois Public Sector Labor Relations Law each fall. This year, the Federal Sector conference will take place on Thursday, September 17 and the Illinois Public Sector conference will take place on Friday, November 13. We encourage you to attend. In addition to complimenting your formal classroom studies, the conferences provide excellent networking opportunities. We expect approximately 250 lawyers and other labor relations professionals from throughout the Midwest to attend the Federal Sector conference and approximately 500 lawyers and other labor relations professionals from across the state of Illinois to attend the public sector conference.
Students may attend the conferences free of charge, but you must register in advance by e-mailing clestaff@kentlaw.edu. If you wish to partake in the food events (continental breakfast, luncheon and end of conference reception) and wish a copy of the conference course book, then you must volunteer to assist with the registration table in the morning. This means rising early to be at the law school early in the morning (7 a.m., I believe) but it is well worth it as it is at the luncheon and reception where you will find the best networking. If you wish to volunteer to assist with registration, please indicate that in your e-mail to clestaff.
