Student Animal Legal Defense Fund

November 18th, 2002

FOOD AND TOY DRIVE FOR THE ANTI-CRUELTY SOCIETY OF CHICAGO
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26TH IN THE LOBBY

The Student Animal Legal Defense Fund will be holding a food, toy, and supply drive to benefit the homeless animals at the Anti-Cruelty Society of Chicago (www.anticruelty.org) on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26TH from 8:30 AM to 6PM in the main lobby at Kent.

The Anti-Cruelty Society provides care for stray and unwanted animals, adoption, a low-cost spay/neuter clinic, dog training classes, educational programs, and rescue and wildlife services.  The shelter is always in need of things to make the animals' stay there more comfortable, so we're collecting:

  • dog and cat food
  • dog and cat treats
  • rawhide chews
  • rubber dog toys
  • all kinds of cat toys
  • leashes
  • collars
  • grooming supplies (shampoo, conditioner, brushes, blow dryers)
  • Of course, old fashioned cash works well, also.  We'll have a collection table with many boxes to fill in the lobby -- please stop by and drop off whatever you can!

NEXT MEETING THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21ST           NOON, ROOM 165

At our next meeting, we'll discuss letter-writing and legislative campaigns, and ways to educate the Chicago-Kent community.  We'll also assign slots to monitor the lobby table for the Anti-Cruelty fundraiser (slots are usually an hour to an hour and a half.)

Feel free to bring your lunch.  Everyone is welcome -- the more faces the better!

INAUGURAL OFFERING OF ANIMAL LAW IN THE SPRING 2003 SEMESTER

In the Spring 2003 semester, Chicago-Kent will offer, for the first time, a course in Animal Law.  Animal Law involves many areas of legal practice and theory -- property, tort law, criminal law, estates, and even constitutional issues.  Too, animal law cases usually employ argument and reasoning similar to environmental law issues.  The Animal Law casebook is already in its second edition after being published in 2000.  If you are interested in how the law treats animals, or just want to have two hours a week in school where you can talk about animal species besides humans, this course should prove a fascinating experience.  And, as the Animal Legal Defense Fund slogan says, "Our clients are the only ones who are always innocent."   The course will be taught by Professor Henning, and will meet once per week for two credits.
