A Message from the Volunteer Coordinator
Nicole Snode, 2L

I am the volunteer coordinator for the Society of Women in Law. In the spring 2002, we participated in the Glass Slipper Project. The Glass Slipper Project collects and donates items, such as dresses, purses, and make-up, to underprivileged high school young women for their prom. Our organization not only donated 35 dresses, 12 pairs of shoes and two purses, but Erin Shanahan and I spent a Saturday morning volunteering as personal shoppers/assistants to the young women. As a volunteer, I was able to see the excitement on their faces when they tried dresses on. Their self-esteem was impacted in such a positive way that I hope we can continue to participate in the program in the years to come.

We also had an orientation for the Chicago Cares Organization. Chicago Cares is an organization that coordinates over 90 volunteer activities each month in a variety of subject matters. The program allows the flexibility that law students need in order to volunteer.

I am planning three or four activities for the Fall 2002 semester. The first activity is to create a team to walk in the 5K AIDS RUN/WALK on September 29, 2002. The second activity is a food-drive to take place in November for the Greater Chicago Food Depository. My goal is to collect 3 boxes (approximately 120 lbs.) of food. We are also working in conjunction with Kent Justice Foundation to benefit the Starlight Children's Organization in a pie fundraising event the week of Thanksgiving. The last activity is to team up with the Young Law Section of the Chicago Bar Association with their "Dear Santa" campaign. Letters written by children to Santa would be distributed to our members to buy a toy mentioned in the letter and send it to them with a note from Santa.

The Spring 2003 semester is still far away, but activities are being planned. I look forward to participating in the Glass Slipper Project once again. I would also like to have a Bottomless Clothing Organization drive. The Bottomless Closet donates business-attire to underprivileged women for interviews and hopefully for their employment.

I welcome any alumni ideas for volunteer opportunities. Please e-mail me at nsnode@kentlaw.edu and I will work with you to bring your ideas to the attention of the organization. Thanks!

If you would like to participate in one of these volunteer activities with Women in Law, or if you have something you would like to donate, please email Nicole Snode at nsnode@kentlaw.edu.
