Women at Chicago-Kent

WBAI New/Student Member Reception
The Women's Bar Association of Illinois (WBAI) is hosting a reception for new and student members on November 9, 1998 at Kiki's Bistro from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.  Kiki's is located at 900 North Franklin Street in Chicago.  Current WBAI student members may attend free of charge.  Students who are not yet WBAI student members can register for membership at the door for $15.00; their admission to the reception will then be free.  For all other non-members or older WBAI members, the fee is $20.00.  All individuals who wish to attend should call Sandra Opyt at 312/341-8530 so they can gauge how many will be in attendance.  (Several WIL Executive Board members will be taking cabs after the General Meeting...if you'd like to join us, please come to the meeting and we'll leave immediately after.)

WIL Social Scheduled For Friday, November 13th
Come relax with your fellow WIL members at this informal gathering!  (Many say its the most fun they've had all semester!)   Hosted in the home of our very own Kim DeMarino, we'll have food & drinks for everyone.  We'll probably hang out together at Kim's for awhile (eating!) and then move on to a local establishment.  (Kim's address is 2115 N. California, 2nd Floor.  Take the Blue line to the California stop. Turn left out of the station.  Walk about 1 1/2 blocks down.  It's a big red 2 story house with an iron gate.)  Should you have any questions, please e-mail us.

"Forget About Finals" Raffle Coming Soon!
We are happy to announce that we will start to sell raffle tickets for our "Forget About Finals" on November 16th.  Tickets will be available from WIL members and from a table in the Spak during lunch and dinner times through December 3rd.  Tickets will be $1 for 1; $5 for 6; or $10 for 15.  All proceeds will go towards our summer fellowship fund. Prizes include t-shirts; a great grey Chicago-Kent sweatshirt; gift certificates from Marshall Fields, Stress Solutions (massages!), Starbucks coffee, Einstein Bagels, and Blockbuster Video; tickets to Second City, restaurant certificates, and much more!   Watch next week for a full listing of prizes.

Help KJF Gather Toiletries for Local Women's Shelters!
The Kent Justice Foundation (KJF) has started its annual toiletries drive.  Please drop off your items in the box near the security desk on the first floor.   Please donate items such as: soap, shampoo, razors, toilet paper, lotions, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.  These are much-needed items that people often forget to donate.   KJF will take the donated items to local women's shelters.  Remember that any items at all that you are able to donate will be very appreciated by the shelters and the women!

Be Santa For a Needy Child!
Every year, the Chicago Bar Association Young Lawyers Section works with the U.S. Post Office to hand out letters from needy children to individuals or offices who want to play "Santa" by purchasing, wrapping and sending a gift.  For each "Dear Santa" letter that it receives, the Post Office checks to ensure that it comes from a needy area.  The CBA/YLS picks up thousands of these letters, reads them, sorts them, and distributes them to individuals willing to play "Santa" to a needy child or family.  Please consider playing "Santa" to one family...it's a very simple way to do something nice for a child or for several children during the holidays.  Here's what is involved...

1. Pick up a request form for a letter (you can specify how many children) from the CBA bulletin board on the Concourse.  The form can either be faxed directly to the CBA or you can drop it off in the CBA mailbox on the 2nd floor and we will make sure it gets sent to the CBA. Letters will be available starting in mid-November.
2. Read the letter to get ideas for gifts.
3. Purchase a gift for each child (like every child, these children have dreams. They might ask for Michael Jordan shoes or Super Nintendo, but obviously you don't need to spend any more than $20 per child.  Besides, what better excuse to go play in Toys-R-Us!).
4. Wrap each gift (add a tag or card with the child's name from Santa).
5. Put the gift(s) in a box.
6. Send the box to the family (by mail or delivery with the return address:
CBA/YLS, 321 South Plymouth Court, Chicago, IL  60604--so any undeliverable items can be given to another child).

That's it!  The CBA gets many thank you letters--the gifts are truly appreciated!  If you have any questions or would like a letter, please contact Stacy Feldman Freel at sfreel@mail.tsmp.com or at 312-627-4157 with any questions.

WIL Outlines Now Available!
WIL has compiled and up-to-date list of all outlines currently available to members on disk and in hard copy form.  If you didn't get a chance to sign up at our General Meetings last week, please e-mail Sita Balthazar-Thomas, our Secretary, at sbalthaz@kentlaw.edu with your request.

REMINDER:Have you paid your membership dues yet?
Please remember to pay your dues for the 1998-'99 year.  A $10.00 check made payable to Women in Law can be left in the WIL mailbox on the 2nd Floor.  Payment of dues allows you to participate in elections and mentorship programs, receive discounts on WIL merchandise, and makes you eligle for our fellowships!  Dues are used to fund programs and social events throughout the year, as well as fellowships we give to students over the summer to help pay for expenses when they volunteer with a public service agency.  Thank you!
